Principal's Message
Welcome to the Sunflower Alternative School website! I am pleased to be the new principal of alternative education for COUSD. I am honored to work with a dedicated group of teachers and support staff who pull together to help every student realize his or her talents and experience success in school. The Sunflower Staff treats every student as an individual and embraces the philosophy that all students do not learn in the same way. We have wonderful students in the various programs offered at our site who make coming to work each day a pleasure! We also have families who genuinely care about the success of their children. We believe that students do best with the support of staff and families working together.
We offer various alternative education models at Sunflower. Arrow High School is a continuation high school. We have approximately 120 students at the school. The school is designed to assist students in need of recovering credits. Our small student population ensures that all students receive the individual attention and educational program they deserve. Our school is an opportunity for students to have a second chance at their dreams of completing high school and earning their high school diplomas. Our students and staff work hard to accomplish these goals and we see a success story everyday!
Oak Knoll Alternative School houses our K-12 home school and 9-12 independent study programs. We have approximately 230 students at Oak Knoll. Our program is designed for students whose families have opted for their children not to be in a traditional school setting. Most of the coursework for Oak Knoll is completed at home, with teachers supporting students at regular scheduled appointments. Our students at Oak Knoll are dedicated and disciplined. Families work closely with teachers and the teacher-family bond is special at Oak Knoll.
Our Bridges Community Day School is also on our site. This is a small learning environment of 45 students who work closely with three teachers. Bridges maintains an extremely small learning environment so students needing academic and behavior intervention can be in small classes with intensive teacher support. We are fortunate at COUSD to have our own community day school so we do not have to send our students to a county program. Our Bridges students are extremely successful.
In addition, we also house a teenage parenting and pregnancy program, ROP, childcare, a special day preschool and preschool. We have many programs which make Sunflower an exciting place!
Our staff is proud of our programs and they work tirelessly to ensure success. It is the place to realize talents and make goals a reality! We are working to be even better by increasing instructional technology throughout the campus, increasing CAHSEE intervention opportunities, extending art and technology throughout the curriculum, ensuring diagnostic testing for all students to ensure proper placement and monitor learning. In addition, we hope to implement an intensive dropout prevention program for at-risk students. It is our hope to continue to improve our programs and meet the changing needs of students.
Please feel free to come by the school office or contact any staff member at (909) 914-3961 if you have questions or need any assistance. We encourage you to be involved in your child's education.
